Identity Database To Be Opened To Private Businesses

Wellington, Aug 24 NZPA - The Government's database that is used to confirm identities will be opened to private businesses under a bill introduced to Parliament today.
Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy says they will be able to use the Data Validation Service to check the identity of customers, but only under strict conditions of security, privacy and integrity.

Secret data laptop stolen from MoD headquarters

A laptop containing secret data has been stolen from the Ministry of Defence's headquarters in central London.

The laptop, with an encryption key for unlocking sensitive files, was taken from the MoD building on Whitehall in late November.

An MoD spokesman said: "An investigation by MoD police is ongoing and it would be inappropriate to comment further."

According to The Sun newspaper, the laptop was left in the headquarters by a high ranking RAF officer.

He was removed from the building and posted to another station while the incident is investigated.
