Internal threats |

Internal threats are rapidly becoming a serious threat. Research shows that approximately 70 - 80% of IT losses are caused by internal attacks. Focusing on network security can lead managers to forget about the damage that company employees can cause.
According to researchers, internal attacks are usually carried out with the following objectives in mind:
- theft and/or destruction of confidential data (industrial espionage or sabotage)
- to obstruct operation of the IT system
- to gain control over critical sectors of infrastructure (energy, transport, communications etc.)
Confidential data leaks can take several different forms:
- via mail server (email)
- via web-servers (an open mail system)
- via printers (printing documents)
- via floppy, CD and USB drives (portable storage media)
An effective information security system should encompass all possible internal attacks and all possible sources of data leakage. Every network node should be monitored to detect what information is being transmitted, and all attempts to gain unsanctioned access to confidential data should be blocked.
